MADAJA, Brgy. Buenavista, Himamaylan City — The Project Tikang team successfully conducted a community outreach visit to Sitio Madaja, Barangay Buenavista, Himamaylan City, on February 8, 2025, bringing integrated services aimed at strengthening livelihoods, education, health, leadership, and peace in the community.

The activity was made possible through the collaboration of several partner organizations, including the Association of Negros Producers Inc. (ANP), 99.7 Brigada News FM Kabankalan, L.N. Agustin Farms Inc., the 94th Infantry Battalion, and Hope Builders Organization Negros Island Inc. (HBONI).

One of the highlights of the visit was the agricultural training conducted by HBONI through Project TUGDO, which focused on onion production. The session emphasized practical agricultural techniques suited to Madaja’s favorable climate, identifying onion as a viable crop for the area. The discussion was led by Leonel Flores, Project TUGDO Head, who underscored the potential of diversified farming to improve farmers’ income.

Health and emergency preparedness were also addressed through a first aid and emergency response training facilitated by Rechel Taborite, a Hope Builder, together with Jovette Agustin of L.N. Agustin Farms Inc. The session included hands-on demonstrations using medical materials and equipment, which were later donated to the Barangay Health Workers (BHWs) of Madaja to strengthen local health response capabilities.

Youth development remained a core focus of the outreach. Leadership training was conducted for Grades 4 to Grade 8 learners, led by Andrelyn Bello, to help instill confidence, responsibility, and teamwork among the youth. Meanwhile, Kinder to Grade 3 learners participated in engaging storytelling sessions facilitated by Loren Lava and other Hope Builders, creating a fun and meaningful learning experience for younger children.

Economic development opportunities were further discussed by the Association of Negros Producers Inc., particularly on the need to reproduce more tikog plants and tikog-based products for potential showcasing at the Negros Trade Fair, Likha, and other market avenues. Sybel Nobleza, ANP External Affairs Head, also emphasized that Madaja holds strong potential for other products such as cacao and coffee, which could further boost the community’s income.

The 94th Infantry Battalion reaffirmed its continued support for the community by highlighting the importance of shared responsibility among residents and stakeholders in promoting peace and security in Madaja.

Community groups warmly welcomed the initiative. The Madaja Handweavers Association (MAHAWA) expressed their gratitude to the Project Tikang team and partners for their continuous visits since 2022, noting how the sustained engagement has helped them move toward becoming a more developed and empowered community. The Bantay Bukid group likewise shared appreciation for the additional knowledge and skills gained during the activity.

In support of education and daily needs, the team also distributed 120 raincoats to learners of Madaja Elementary School and 106 food containers. To cap off the day, interactive games were initiated, bringing joy and strengthening the bond between the volunteers and community members.

Through Project Tikang, HBONI and its partners continue to demonstrate their commitment to holistic community development, bringing hope, skills, and opportunities closer to the people of Madaja.
