Over a hundred Grade 8 students of Handumanan National High School actively participated in the United Nations Symposium held on campus, centering on the theme “Cooperatives Build a Better World” on October 7, 2025, at Handumanan National High School, Bacolod City.
The event aimed to deepen students’ understanding of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and inspire them to take part in building a more sustainable and equitable society.
The symposium emphasized the vital role of education and youth engagement in realizing the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals, which address global challenges such as poverty, inequality, climate change, and quality education.
A highlight of the program was the talk delivered by Kenneth Bacala, the Founder and Chief Executive Director of Hope Builders Organization Negros Island Inc. (HBONI).
Bacala shared insights on integrating SDG-related initiatives into the school environment and encouraged students to become changemakers in their communities.
“The journey toward sustainability starts in our schools. When young people understand their role in shaping a better future, they become powerful agents of change,” Bacala said during his talk.
Through interactive discussions, students explored practical ways to support the SDGs—such as waste segregation, tree planting, and youth-led projects.
Teachers and students of Handumanan NHS expressed gratitude for the meaningful learning experience, noting that the symposium not only broadened students’ global awareness but also strengthened their sense of responsibility toward their local community.
The symposium is a venue for students to champion the SDGs within their school and beyond, embodying the message that cooperation and collective action can build a better world.
