The Hope Builders Organization Negros Island Inc. (HBONI) spearheaded a relief operation in Barangay Ilijan, Bago City in Negros Occidental, on March 6, 2025, extending help to over 100 families affected by a recent volcanic activity of Kanlaon.

The relief initiative was in partnership with the Army’s 94th Infantry Battalion, 3ID, PA (94IB), Binalbagan National High School-Supreme Secondary Learner Government (BNHS-SSLG), and West Visayas State University – Himamaylan City Campus Student Council (WVSU-HCC CSC).

The operation delivered critical supplies to those displaced by the disaster, offering immediate support in a time of crisis. The initiative was coordinated by the HBONI-Bago City Council and the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) of the said village, emphasizing the role of local governance and youth leadership in humanitarian efforts.

Village councilor Reiniere Zynel Flor Talento expressed his heartfelt gratitude on social media, recognizing the collective contributions from multiple partners.

“Amon gid ginapasalamatan ang Binalbagan National High School-SSLGO, kag 94th Infantry Battalion sa inyo nga effort kag supporta,” he said.

HBONI and its partners distributed a range of essential items to those in need. These included:

  • 96 bottles of 500 ml water
  • 1 box of noodles
  • 104 packs of 1.5 kg rice
  • 10 cans of assorted goods

Students from BNHS and WVSU-HCC donated the relief goods, reinforcing the vital role of youth engagement in humanitarian efforts while cultivating a deep sense of responsibility and empathy among young people.

Since launching its donation drive in December 2024, HBONI has been working to provide aid across various affected areas. The support of the 94IB, which provided free transportation for volunteers and supplies, was crucial to ensuring the timely delivery of aid.

Collaboration

While the volcanic eruption caused significant displacement, the collaborative efforts of local organizations, youth groups, and military personnel have made a significant impact in helping the community begin the recovery process.

By fostering collaboration between local government units, educational institutions, and civic organizations, the community is laying the groundwork for future disaster preparedness and response initiatives.

Also, the involvement of youth organizations in various relief operations highlights the critical role that younger generations play in disaster response and community building.

These efforts not only empower young people but also ensure that future generations are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to respond effectively to crises.*
